The upgrade is worth making the moment your plot is full enough that the entry sprinkler's coverage stops feeling impactful — a partially filled plot gets very little from any area-based bonus, so do not buy this tier until the rows are planted end to end.

The honest trade-off versus staying on Common is purely cycle speed: a stronger grow-speed boost means shorter waits between harvests on every plant in radius, which compounds across multiple staggered plots. Skip the upgrade if you are still expanding plot count — a wider coverage of a weaker bonus beats a narrower coverage of a stronger one.
