Tomato at 200 Sheckles is the first Uncommon multi-harvest most players commit to, and the right moment is once a Strawberry / Blueberry plot is producing enough surplus that 200 Sheckles per plot is no longer a scary outlay. The per-pick value (9 Sheckles) is modest, but multi-harvest means the seed keeps producing across many cycles — the amortised cost per harvest is what matters, not the sticker.
Tomato's real role is as the bridge into the Rare tier. Once several Tomato plots are running, the income compounds fast enough that a Rare seed like Bamboo or Corn becomes affordable. Skip Tomato only if you are willing to grind Common plots longer to jump straight to Rare — most players find that slower overall.
Inside the Uncommon tier the direct comparison is Apple. Both are multi-harvest; the difference is grow cycle and per-pick value. Apple pays more per pick but takes longer to mature, so on a single-plot active loop Tomato's faster cycle wins; on a multi-plot staggered setup Apple's higher per-pick value wins because you are always harvesting something.
Against Tulip (single-harvest Uncommon), Tomato loses on the first pick but wins on the third harvest forward, since Tulip needs a replant each cycle. The break-even point depends on your attention budget — the more often you can replant, the smaller Tomato's edge. See the values table for the exact per-pick numbers across the tier.
